Abstract

This study examines the relationship between poverty and mental health in Mexico's federal states, using statistical data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) and the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL). Despite the initial assumption that higher levels of poverty would correlate with a greater prevalence of mental health issues, findings reveal no direct or consistent relationship between poverty levels and various dimensions of mental health, including the prevalence of mental conditions, anxiety, depression, and suicide rates. The results indicate that other factors, such as urbanization, access to mental health services, social cohesion, and cultural influences, among others, may play a significant role in determining mental health outcomes. These findings suggest the complexity of the interaction between socioeconomic conditions and mental health, stressing the need for multifaceted approaches to address mental health disparities. In this context, effective policy interventions should consider diverse determinants to better safeguard the constitutional human right to mental health, focusing, for example, on improving mental health services, reducing poverty, and strengthening social support networks. This comprehensive understanding can inform the development of strategies aimed at improving mental health outcomes in different regions of Mexico.
